Rev 16:1–21. THE SEVEN VIALS AND THE CONSEQUENT PLAGUES.

The trumpets shook the world kingdoms in a longer process; the vials destroy with a swift and sudden overthrow the kingdom of “the beast” in particular who had invested himself with the world kingdom. The Hebrews thought the Egyptian plagues to have been inflicted with but an interval of a month between them severally [BENGEL, referring to SEDER OLAM]. As Moses took ashes from an earthly common furnace, so angels, as priestly ministers in the heavenly temple, take holy fire in sacred vials or bowls, from the heavenly altar to pour down (compare Rev 8:5). The same heavenly altar which would have kindled the sweet incense of prayer bringing down blessing upon earth, by man’s sin kindles the fiery descending curse. Just as the river Nile, which ordinarily is the source of Egypt’s fertility, became blood and a curse through Egypt’s sin.

1. a great voice—namely, God’s. These seven vials (the detailed expansion of the vintage, Rev 14:18–20) being called “the last,” must belong to the period just when the term of the beast’s power has expired (whence reference is made in them all to the worshippers of the beast as the objects of the judgments), close to the end or coming of the Son of man. The first four are distinguished from the last three, just as in the case of the seven seals and the seven trumpets. The first four are more general, affecting the earth, the sea, springs, and the sun, not merely a portion of these natural bodies, as in the case of the trumpets, but the whole of them; the last three are more particular, affecting the throne of the beast, the Euphrates, and the grand consummation. Some of these particular judgments are set forth in detail in the seventeenth through twentieth chapters.

out of the temple—B and Syriac omit. But A, C, Vulgate, and ANDREAS support the words.

the vials—so Syriac and Coptic. But A, B, C, Vulgate, and ANDREAS read, “the seven vials.”

upon—Greek, “into.”

2. went—Greek, “went away.”

poured out—So the angel cast fire into the earth previous to the series of trumpets (Rev 8:5).

upon—so Coptic. But A, B, C, Vulgate, and Syriac read, “into.”

noisome—literally, “evil” (compare De 28:27, 35). The very same Greek word is used in the Septuagint as here, Greek, “helkos.” The reason why the sixth Egyptian plague is the first here is because it was directed against the Egyptian magicians, Jannes and Jambres, so that they could not stand before Moses; and so here the plague is sent upon those who in the beast worship had practiced sorcery. As they submitted to the mark of the beast, so they must bear the mark of the avenging God. Contrast Rev 7:3; Ez 9:4, 6.

grievous—distressing to the sufferers.

sore upon the men—antitype to the sixth Egyptian plague.

which had the mark of the beast—Therefore this first vial is subsequent to the period of the beast’s rule.

3. angel—So B and ANDREAS. But A, C, and Vulgate omit it.

upon—Greek, “into.”

became as … blood—answering to another Egyptian plague.

of a dead man—putrefying.

living soul—So B and ANDREAS. But A, C, and Syriac, “soul of life” (compare Ge 1:30).

in the sea—So B and ANDREAS. But A, C, and Syriac read, “(as respects) the things in the sea.”

4. (Ex 7:20.)

angel—so Syriac, Coptic, and ANDREAS. But A, B, C, and Vulgate omit it.

5. angel of the waters—that is, presiding over the waters.

O Lord—omitted by A, B, C, Vulgate, Syriac, Coptic, and ANDREAS.

and shalt be—A, B, C, Vulgate, and ANDREAS for this clause read, “(which art and wast) holy.” The Lord is now no longer He that shall come, for He is come in vengeance and therefore the third of the three clauses found in Rev 1:4, 8; 4:8 is here and in Rev 11:17 omitted.

judged thus—literally, “these things.” “Thou didst inflict this judgment.”

6. (Rev 11:18, end; Ge 9:6; Is 49:26.) An anticipation of Rev 18:20, 24; compare Rev 13:15.

For—A, B, C, and ANDREAS omit.

7. another out of—omitted in A, C, Syriac, and Coptic. Translate then, “I heard the altar [personified] saying.” On it the prayers of saints are presented before God: beneath it are the souls of the martyrs crying for vengeance on the foes of God.

8. angel—so Coptic and ANDREAS. But A, B, C, Vulgate, and Syriac omit it.

upon—not as in Rev 16:2, 3, “into.”

sun—Whereas by the fourth trumpet the sun is darkened (Rev 8:12) in a third part, here by the fourth vial the sun’s bright scorching power is intensified.

power was given unto him—rather, “unto it,” the sun.

men—Greek, “the men,” namely, those who had the mark of the beast (Rev 16:2).

9. men—Greek, “the men.”

repented not to give him glory—(Rev 9:20). Affliction, if it does not melt, hardens the sinner. Compare the better result on others, Rev 11:13; 14:7; 15:4.

10. angel—omitted by A, B, C, Vulgate, and Syriac. But Coptic and ANDREAS support it.

Who are the main players in your passage? What makes them important to the passage?

Examine relationships between your passage and other passages in the Bible. Letting Scripture interpret Scripture has been a guiding principle of biblical interpretation for centuries. The idea is that the meaning of an obscure passage might be clarified by other passages where the meaning is more straightforward.
Desired Outcomes
You will better understand the relationships between your passage and other passages in the Bible.
You will identify cross-references relevant to consider in the study of your passage.
Explanation
The idea that Scripture interprets Scripture means that an interpretation should be consistent with the the clear teachings found throughout all of Scripture. To check this, you should evaluate other passages that are similar, or add more context, or provide historical background. Identifying cross-references is important, but you must also determine why the cross reference is important.
In identifying and evaluating cross-references, you will get more relevant results by focusing your attention on a smaller section of Scripture. For example, an entire biblical book or full chapter will include many cross-references to evaluate while a paragraph or single verse will likely have a smaller number of cross-references that are directly relevant to the content of that short section of Scripture.

Important Passages Section

The Important Passages guide uses aggregated data from lexicons and commentaries to list, map, and categorize cross-references across the biblical text. While traditional cross-referencing tools provide a list of related verses and passages, with the Important Passages guide users will be able to determine what connects related verses and passages as well as where the strongest connections exist.

To use the guide:

  1.      Click Guides, begin typing “important” into the Guides search box, then click Important Passages.
  2.      Enter a passage in the Reference box at the top of the panel.
  3.      Click All Types above the results and choose from the list to limit the type of references that are displayed.
  4.      Users can choose whether the displayed references are To the entered passage or From the entered passage by clicking To, which is located next to All Types.
  5.      On the same line, users can choose whether results are grouped By Type (which groups results by types such as Commentaries, Lexicons, or Shared Topics) or By Rank (which lists results in order from highest to lowest frequency of reference).
  6.      In the Type view, when a section is expanded, the guide displays all the verses listed according to the selected reference type. A More >> link will display at the bottom of each section until all the references are displayed. In the Rank view, each reference will display a Bible verse (with a hyperlink to the preferred Bible), and the reference types the verse matches on. This section will also display a More >> link until all the returned references are displayed.
  7.      At the bottom of the panel, users will find links to Save as Passage List and Open # passages in [Preferred Bible]. Clicking the second option opens the preferred Bible in a filtered view that only displays the results of the Important Passages guide.

Important Words Section

The Important Words tool aggregates data from all commentary resources (not just those in the user’s Library) to expose words with a high frequency of references. This tool not only surfaces frequently referenced terms but also ranks them according to “importance.” This ranking system is based on the number of references collected from commentary resources. Frequently discussed terms will appear higher in the ranking system. References include both English and original language terms. For example, the term “word” is referenced by its English designation as well as the Greek term logos. The Important Words Tool counts references from both designations and ranks the term accordingly. By selecting an “important word,” users may discover a list of references in relevant resources so that they can continue their investigation.

eview each key cross-reference and consider its relevance to your passage. Why is the cross-reference relevant for your passage?

Which cross-references are most important for your passage? What additional insight do the related passages provide for your understanding of your passage?

Review what you have studied and summarize it. Writing a brief summary of your passage and what you’ve learned about it will strengthen your understanding of the passage and help you remember the main points from your study.
Desired Outcome
Summarizing what you have learned will help seal your understanding of your passage.
Explanation
Arriving at your own informed understanding of a passage is important before you move on to consult resources like commentaries that give you the interpretations that other people have reached about the same text.

In a brief paragraph, summarize the passage and the main points you have learned about it from your study.

Look at Bible commentaries to see how others have interpreted your passage. Review the commentary’s discussion to find out which parts of your passage are most challenging or unclear. A commentary discussion may alert you that something you thought was clear in the text is actually a complicated and debated issue.
Desired Outcomes
You will examine commentaries and consider their contributions to better understanding your passage.
You will determine how your study should account for what you learned from the commentary discussions.
Explanation
Commentaries come in many different forms and not all have “commentary” in the title. For example, a study Bible is a type of commentary because it offers notes that point out things in the passage that are difficult to understand and provides brief explanations of possible interpretations. Commentaries generally find ways to bring in important exegetical, theological, or historical information whenever it is relevant to understanding the passage. Bible commentaries often spend the most time on aspects of the book that are unclear or challenging to understand.

Record insights gained from reading the commentaries. Note especially the parts of your passage that inspired the most discussion in the commentaries.
Have the consulted commentaries modified your understanding of the passage? In what way?

An important part of Bible study is determining what timeless principles are taught in a passage so that you can apply those principles in your own life. The meaning of a passage will be applied differently at different times and in different places, but the underlying truths of Scripture will be applicable in some way at all times and places. Before we can apply a passage, we must understand its theological principles.

Desired Outcomes
You will consider the deeper meaning of your passage.
You will identify the theological principles taught by your passage.
Explanation
Application requires identifying the core principles taught in Scripture. This aspect of interpretation is one of the most challenging because we often have trouble separating the timeless theological principles in the text from the cultural and historical particulars that accompany those principles in the text. A list of the primary theological themes found in the passage provides a starting point for determining a passage’s theological principles.

Agents of Satan
Synopse
Satan works in this world through people and through those spiritual beings who acknowledge his authority. His agents oppose God’s will and purposes.
Satan works through people
Satan’s human agents pursue his evil desires
Joh 8,44 Jesus Christ speaking of the relationship of some unbelieving Jews to Satan.
Johannes 8,44 (D-R) — 44 You are of your father the devil: and the desires of your father you will do. He was a murderer from the beginning: and he stood not in the truth, because truth is not in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father thereof.
Apostelgeschichte 13,10 (D-R) — 10 Said: O full of all guile and of all deceit, child of the devil, enemy of all justice, thou ceases not to pervert the right ways of the Lord.
1. Johannes 3,8–10 (D-R) — 8 He that committeth sin is of the devil: for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God appeared, that he might destroy the works of the devil. 9 Whosoever is born of God committeth not sin: for his seed abideth in him. And he cannot sin, because he is born of God. 10 In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil. Whosoever is not just is not of God, or he that loveth not his brother.
1. Johannes 3,12 (D-R) — 12 Not as Cain, who was of the wicked one and killed his brother. And wherefore did he kill him? Because his own works were wicked: and his brother’s just.
Satan works through people to oppose God’s purposes
Apg 5,1–9 Ananias and Sapphira; Mt 16,23 Simon Peter
Apostelgeschichte 5,1–9 (D-R) — 1 But a certain man named Ananias, with Saphira his wife, sold a piece of land, 2 And by fraud kept back part of the price of the land, his wife being privy thereunto: and bringing a certain part of it, laid it at the feet of the apostles. 3 But Peter said: Ananias, why hath Satan tempted thy heart, that thou shouldst lie to the Holy Ghost and by fraud keep part of the price of the land? 4 Whilst it remained, did it not remain to thee? And after it was sold, was it not in thy power? Why hast thou conceived this thing in thy heart? Thou hast not lied to men, but to God. 5 And Ananias, hearing these words, fell down and gave up the ghost. And there came great fear upon all that heard it. 6 And the young men rising up, removed him, and carrying him out, buried him. 7 And it was about the space of three hours after, when his wife, not knowing what had happened, came in. 8 And Peter said to her: Tell me, woman, whether you sold the land for so much? And she said: Yea, for so much. 9 And Peter said unto her: Why have you agreed together to tempt the spirit of the Lord? Behold the feet of them who have buried thy husband are at the door: and they shall carry thee out,
Matthäus 16,23 (D-R) — 23 Who turning, said to Peter: Go behind me, Satan, thou art a scandal unto me: because thou savourest not the things that are of God, but the things that are of men.
Judas Iscariot:
Lukas 22,3 (D-R) — 3 And Satan entered into Judas, who was surnamed Iscariot, one of the twelve.
Johannes 6,70 (D-R) — 71 Jesus answered them: Have not I chosen you twelve? And one of you is a devil.
Johannes 13,2 (D-R) — 2 And when supper was done (the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, to betray him),
Johannes 13,27 (D-R) — 27 And after the morsel, Satan entered into him. And Jesus said to him: That which thou dost, do quickly.
Apg 13,8–10 Elymas, the sorcerer
Apostelgeschichte 13,8–10 (D-R) — 8 But Elymas the magician (for so his name is interpreted) withstood them, seeking to turn away the proconsul from the faith. 9 Then Saul, otherwise Paul, filled with the Holy Ghost, looking upon him, 10 Said: O full of all guile and of all deceit, child of the devil, enemy of all justice, thou ceases not to pervert the right ways of the Lord.

False prophets
Deuteronomium 13,5 (D-R) — 5 And that prophet or forger of dreams shall be slain: because he spoke to draw you away from the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed you from the house of bondage: to make thee go out of the way, which the Lord thy God commanded thee: and thou shalt take away the evil out of the midst of thee.
Jeremia 23,26–27 (D-R) — 26 How long shall this be in the heart of the prophets that prophesy lies, and that prophesy the delusions of their own heart? 27 Who seek to make my people forget my name through their dreams, which they tell every man to his neighbour: as their fathers forgot my name for Baal.
Jeremia 28,15 (D-R) — 15 And Jeremias the prophet said to Hananias the prophet: Hear now, Hananias: the Lord hath not sent thee, and thou hast made this people to trust in a lie.
Jeremia 29,21 (D-R) — 21 Thus saith the Lord of hosts the God of Israel, to Achab the son of Colias, and to Sedecias the son of Maasias, who prophesy unto you in my name falsely: Behold I will deliver them up into the hands of Nabuchodonosor the king of Babylon: and he shall kill them before your eyes.
Ezechiel 13,6–9 (D-R) — 6 They see vain things, and they foretell lies, saying: The Lord saith: whereas the Lord hath not sent them: and they have persisted to confirm what they have said. 7 Have you not seen a vain vision and spoken a lying divination: and you say: The Lord saith: whereas I have not spoken. 8 Therefore thus saith the Lord God: Because you have spoken vain things, and have seen lies: therefore behold I come against you, saith the Lord God. 9 And my hand shall be upon the prophets that see vain things, and that divine lies: they shall not be in the council of my people, nor shall they be written in the writing of the house of Israel, neither shall they enter into the land of Israel, and you shall know that I am the Lord God.
Matthäus 7,15 (D-R) — 15 Beware of false prophets, who come to you in the clothing of sheep, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.
Matthäus 24,24 (D-R) — 24 For there shall arise false Christs and false prophets and shall shew great signs and wonders, insomuch as to deceive (if possible) even the elect.
2. Petrus 2,1–3 (D-R) — 1 But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there shall be among you lying teachers who shall bring in sects of perdition and deny the Lord who bought them: bringing upon themselves swift destruction. 2 And many shall follow their riotousness, through whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of. 3 And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you. Whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not: and their perdition slumbereth not.

Dtn 13,13; 2Kö 21,9–26 Manasseh and his son, Amon; Spr 7,21 the adulteress; Jes 3,12; Jer 50,6; 2Pe 2,18–19
Deuteronomium 13,13 (D-R) — 13 Children of Belial are gone out of the midst of thee, and have withdrawn the inhabitants of their city, and have said: Let us go, and serve strange gods which you know not:
2. Könige 21,9–26 (D-R) — 9 But they hearkened not: but were seduced by Manasses, to do evil more than the nations which the Lord destroyed before the children of Israel. 10 And the Lord spoke in the hand of his servants, the prophets, saying: 11 Because Manasses, king of Juda, hath done these most wicked abominations, beyond all that the Amorrhites did before him, and hath made Juda also to sin with his filthy doings: 12 Therefore thus saith the Lord, the God of Israel: Behold, I will bring on evils upon Jerusalem and Juda: that whosoever shall hear of them, both his ears shall tingle. 13 And I will stretch over Jerusalem the line of Samaria, and the weight of the house of Achab: and I will efface Jerusalem, as writings tables are wont to be effaced, and I will erase and turn it, and draw the pencil often over the face thereof. 14 And I will leave the remnants of my inheritance, and will deliver them into the hands of their enemies: and they shall become a prey, and a spoil to all their enemies. 15 Because they have done evil before me, and have continued to provoke me, from the day that their fathers came out of Egypt, even unto this day. 16 Moreover, Manasses shed also very much innocent blood, till he filled Jerusalem up to the mouth: besides his sins, wherewith he made Juda to sin, to do evil before the Lord. 17 Now the rest of the acts of Manasses, and all that he did, and his sin, which he sinned, are they not written in the book of the words of the days of the kings of Juda? 18 And Manasses slept with his fathers, and was buried in the garden of his own house, in the garden of Oza: and Amon, his son, reigned in his stead. 19 Two and twenty years old was Amon when he began to reign, and he reigned two years in Jerusalem: the name of his mother was Messalemeth, the daughter of Harus, of Jeteba. 20 And he did evil in the sight of the Lord, as Manasses, his father, had done. 21 And he walked in all the way in which his father had walked: and he served the abominations which his father had served, and he adored them. 22 And forsook the Lord, the God of his fathers, and walked not in the way of the Lord. 23 And his servants plotted against him, and slew the king in his own house. 24 But the people of the land slew all them that had conspired against king Amon: and made Josias, his son, their king in his stead. 25 But the rest of the acts of Amon, which he did, are they not written in the book of the words of the days of the kings of Juda? 26 And they buried him in his sepulchre, in the garden of Oza: and his son, Josias, reigned in his stead.
Sprüche 7,21 (D-R) — 21 She entangled him with many words, and drew him away with the flattery of her lips.
Jesaja 3,12 (D-R) — 12 As for my people, their oppressors have stripped them, and women have ruled over them. O my people, they that call thee blessed, the same deceive thee, and destroy the way of thy steps.
Jeremia 50,6 (D-R) — 6 My people have been a lost flock, their shepherds have caused them to go astray, and have made them wander in the mountains: they have gone from mountain to hill, they have forgotten their resting place.
2. Petrus 2,18–19 (D-R) — 18 For, speaking proud words of vanity, they allure by the desires of fleshly riotousness those who for a little while escape, such as converse in error: 19 Promising them liberty, whereas they themselves are the slaves of corruption. For by whom a man is overcome, of the same also he is the slave.
Satan works through his spiritual agents
Satan’s angels
Matthäus 25,41 (D-R) — 41 Then he shall say to them also that shall be on his left hand: Depart from me, you cursed, into everlasting fire, which was prepared for the devil and his angels.
Siehe auch 2Pe 2,4; Offb 12,7 “angel” and “messenger” are the same word in Greek
2. Petrus 2,4 (D-R) — 4 For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but delivered them, drawn down by infernal ropes to the lower hell, unto torments, to be reserved unto judgment:
Offenbarung 12,7 (D-R) — 7 And there was a great battle in heaven: Michael and his angels fought with the dragon, and the dragon fought, and his angels.
Satan’s demons
Lukas 13,11–16 (D-R) — 11 And behold there was a woman who had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years. And she was bowed together: neither could she look upwards at all. 12 Whom when Jesus saw, he called her unto him and said to her: Woman, thou art delivered from thy infirmity. 13 And he laid his hands upon her: and immediately she was made straight and glorified God. 14 And the ruler of the synagogue being angry that Jesus had healed on the sabbath answering, said to the multitude: Six days there are wherein you ought to work. In them therefore come and be healed: and not on the sabbath day. 15 And the Lord answering him, said: Ye hypocrites, doth not every one of you, on the sabbath day, loose his ox or his ass from the manger and lead them to water? 16 And ought not this daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?

The antichrist
1. Johannes 4,1–4 (D-R) — 1 Dearly beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits if they be of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. 2 By this is the spirit of God known. Every spirit which confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: 3 And every spirit that dissolveth Jesus is not of God. And this is Antichrist, of whom you have heard that he cometh: and he is now already in the world. 4 You are of God, little children, and have overcome him. Because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.
2. Johannes 7 (D-R) — 7 For many seducers are gone out into the world who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a seducer and an antichrist.
The man of lawlessness
2. Thessalonicher 2,3–10 (D-R) — 3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for unless there come a revolt first, and the man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition 4 Who opposeth and is lifted up above all that is called God or that is worshipped, so that he sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself as if he were God. 5 Remember you not that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things? 6 And now you know what withholdeth, that he may be revealed in his time. 7 For the mystery of iniquity already worketh: only that he who now holdeth do hold, until he be taken out of the way. 8 And then that wicked one shall be revealed: whom the Lord Jesus shall kill with the spirit of his mouth and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: him 9 Whose coming is according to the working of Satan, in all power and signs and lying wonders: 10 And in all seduction of iniquity to them that perish: because they receive not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. Therefore God shall send them the operation of error, to believe lying:
The beast
Offenbarung 11,7 (D-R) — 7 And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the abyss shall make war against them and shall overcome them and kill them.
Offenbarung 13,1–8 (D-R) — 1 And I saw a beast coming up out the sea, having seven heads and ten horns: and upon his horns, ten diadems: and upon his heads, names of blasphemy. 2 And the beast which I saw was like to a leopard: and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion. And the dragon gave him his own strength and great power. 3 And I saw one of his heads as it were slain to death: and his death’s wound was healed. And all the earth was in admiration after the beast. 4 And they adored the dragon which gave power to the beast. And they adored the beast, saying: Who is like to the beast? And who shall be able to fight with him? 5 And there was given to him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies: and power was given to him to do, two and forty months. 6 And he opened his mouth unto blasphemies against God, to blaspheme his name and his tabernacle and them that dwell in heaven. 7 And it was given unto him to make war with the saints and to overcome them. And power was given him over every tribe and people and tongue and nation. 8 And all that dwell upon the earth adored him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb which was slain from the beginning of the world.
Offenbarung 13,11–18 (D-R) — 11 And I saw another beast coming up out of the earth: and he had two horns, like a lamb: and he spoke as a dragon. 12 And he executed all the power of the former beast in his sight. And he caused the earth and them that dwell therein to adore the first beast, whose wound to death was healed. 13 And he did great signs, so that he made also fire to come down from heaven unto the earth, in the sight of men. 14 And he seduced them that dwell on the earth, for the signs which were given him to do in the sight of the beast: saying to them that dwell on the earth that they should make the image of the beast which had the wound by the sword and lived. 15 And it was given him to give life to the image of the beast: and that the image of the beast should speak: and should cause that whosoever will not adore the image of the beast should be slain. 16 And he shall make all, both little and great, rich and poor, freemen and bondmen, to have a character in their right hand or on their foreheads: 17 And that no man might buy or sell, but he that hath the character, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. 18 Here is wisdom. He that hath understanding, let him count the number of the beast. For it is the number of a man: and the number of him is six hundred sixty-six.
Offenbarung 14,9–11 (D-R) — 9 And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice: If any man shall adore the beast and his image and receive his character in his forehead or in his hand, 10 He also shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is mingled with pure wine in the cup of his wrath: and shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the sight of the holy angels and in the sight of the Lamb. 11 And the smoke of their torments, shall ascend up for ever and ever: neither have they rest day nor night, who have adored the beast and his image and whoever receiveth the character of his name.
Offenbarung 16,13 (D-R) — 13 And I saw from the mouth of the dragon and from the mouth of the beast and from the mouth of the false prophet, three unclean spirits like frogs.
Offenbarung 17,8 (D-R) — 8 The beast which thou sawest, was, and is not, and shall come up out of the bottomless pit and go into destruction. And the inhabitants on the earth (whose names are not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world) shall wonder, seeing the beast that was and is not.
Offenbarung 19,20 (D-R) — 20 And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet who wrought signs before him, wherewith he seduced them who received the character of the beast and who adored his image. These two were cast alive into the pool of fire burning with brimstone.
Offenbarung 20,10 (D-R) — 10 And the false prophet shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.
The false prophet
Offenbarung 16,13 (D-R) — 13 And I saw from the mouth of the dragon and from the mouth of the beast and from the mouth of the false prophet, three unclean spirits like frogs.
Offenbarung 19,20 (D-R) — 20 And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet who wrought signs before him, wherewith he seduced them who received the character of the beast and who adored his image. These two were cast alive into the pool of fire burning with brimstone.
The prostitute or Babylon the Great
Offenbarung 14,8 (D-R) — 8 And another angel followed, saying: That great Babylon is fallen, is fallen; which made all nations to drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication.
Offenbarung 16,19 (D-R) — 19 And the great city was divided into three parts: and the cities of the Gentiles fell. And great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give her the cup of the wine of the indignation of his wrath.
Offenbarung 17,1–18 (D-R) — 1 And there came one of the seven angels who had the seven vials and spoke with me, saying: Come, I will shew thee the condemnation of the great harlot, who sitteth upon many waters: 2 With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication. And they who inhabit the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her whoredom. 3 And he took me away in spirit into the desert. And I saw a woman sitting upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns. 4 And the woman was clothed round about with purple and scarlet, and gilt with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand, full of the abomination and filthiness of her fornication. 5 And on her forehead a name was written: A mystery: Babylon the great, the mother of the fornications and the abominations of the earth. 6 And I saw the woman drunk with the blood of the saints and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus. And I wondered, when I had seen her, with great admiration. 7 And the angel said to me: Why dost thou wonder? I will tell thee the mystery of the woman and of the beast which carrieth her, which hath the seven heads and ten horns. 8 The beast which thou sawest, was, and is not, and shall come up out of the bottomless pit and go into destruction. And the inhabitants on the earth (whose names are not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world) shall wonder, seeing the beast that was and is not. 9 And here is the understanding that hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, upon which the woman sitteth: and they are seven kings. 10 Five are fallen, one is, and the other is not yet come: and when he is come, he must remain a short time. 11 And the beast which was and is not: the same also is the eighth, and is of the seven, and goeth into destruction. 12 And the ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings, who have not yet received a kingdom: but shall receive power as kings, one hour after the beast. 13 These have one design: and their strength and power they shall deliver to the beast. 14 These shall fight with the Lamb. And the Lamb shall overcome them because he is Lord of lords and King of kings: and they that are with him are called and elect and faithful. 15 And he said to me: The waters which thou sawest, where the harlot sitteth, are peoples and nations and tongues. 16 And the ten horns which thou sawest in the beast: These shall hate the harlot and shall make her desolate and naked and shall eat her flesh and shall burn her with fire. 17 For God hath given into their hearts to do that which pleaseth him: that they give their kingdom to the beast, till the words of God be fulfilled. 18 And the woman which thou sawest is the great city which hath kingdom over the kings of the earth.
Offenbarung 18,1–10 (D-R) — 1 And after these things, I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power: and the earth was enlightened with his glory. 2 And he cried out with a strong voice, saying: Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen: and is become the habitation of devils and the hold of every unclean spirit and the hold of every unclean and hateful bird: 3 Because all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication: and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her; And the merchants of the earth have been made rich by the power of her delicacies. 4 And I heard another voice from heaven, saying: Go out from her, my people; that you be not partakers of her sins and that you receive not of her plagues. 5 For her sins have reached unto heaven: and the Lord hath remembered her iniquities. 6 Render to her as she also hath rendered to you: and double unto her double, according to her works. In the cup wherein she hath mingled, mingle ye double unto her. 7 As much as she hath glorified herself and lived in delicacies, so much torment and sorrow give ye to her. Because she saith in her heart: I sit a queen and am no widow: and sorrow I shall not see. 8 Therefore, shall her plagues come in one day, death and mourning and famine. And she shall be burnt with the fire: because God is strong, who shall judge her. 9 And the kings of the earth, who have committed fornication and lived in delicacies with her, shall weep and bewail themselves over her, when they shall see the smoke of her burning: 10 Standing afar off for fear of her torments, saying: Alas! alas! that great city, Babylon, that mighty city: for in one hour is thy judgment come.
Offenbarung 18,18 (D-R) — 18 And cried, seeing the place of her burning, saying: What city is like to this great city?
Offenbarung 19,2 (D-R) — 2 For true and just are his judgments, who hath judged the great harlot which corrupted the earth with her fornication and hath revenged the blood of his servants, at her hands.
